FAQs

What is Unplugged Tots?

1

Unplugged Tots is a screen‑free, play‑based programme designed to introduce young children (ages ~2½ to 8) to the foundational thinking behind coding — via games, craft, movement and simple activities rather than computers.

It’s aimed at helping children build skills such as problem‑solving, logical thinking, sequencing, pattern recognition, and resilience — in a playful, developmentally appropriate way.

Who is Unplugged Tots for?

2

  • Parents, grandparents, childminders, nannies, or carers of toddlers and preschoolers (roughly ages 2.5 and upwards)

  • Educators, nurseries or schools looking to embed computational thinking early via unplugged, hands‑on learning.

  • Anyone interested in offering their child/children meaningful play that builds real‑world thinking and foundational skills — especially those concerned about excessive screen time.

What is the Unplugged Family Club?

3

It’s monthly delivery of play based, screen-free activities delivered via email.

There are two tiers:

  • Tier 1 (£6.99/month): You get a beautifully designed PDF Activity Guide — instructions + learning outcomes, rooted in computational thinking. No screens needed, just unplugged play.

  • Tier 2 (£14.99/month): Everything in Tier 1, plus — an intro video, an explainer video walking you through the activity, and a reflection video to guide you and help you notice what your child does and learns along the way.

Is prior knowledge of coding or teaching needed?

4

No. The activities are designed so that you don’t need prior technical or coding expertise. The approach is intentionally accessible — the aim is for playful, natural learning rather than formal technical teaching.

Whether you’re “crafty” or not doesn’t matter. The activities are low‑prep and realistic (no glitter explosions or Pinterest‑level pressure). They work even if you don’t consider yourself a “craft parent.”

What kinds of skills does Unplugged Tots help develop?

5

Through play-based, screen-free activities, your child can develop:

  • Sequencing, logic, pattern recognition, basic algorithms — foundational computational thinking skills.

  • Problem‑solving and critical thinking — breaking down problems into manageable parts and working through them.

  • Collaboration, communication, creativity, resilience (“learning from failure”), and a growth mindset.

  • Confidence and a sense of agency: children learn they can “think, try, fail, try again” in a safe, supportive space. The unplugged‑play environment emphasises exploration, not perfection.
